UNESCO turns family conversations into healthier future

In 2021, UNESCO and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar began a journey to make conversations about sexual and reproductive health easier, more accurate and culturally appropriate between parents and their children. On 3 September 2026, that journey reached an important milestone with the official dissemination of the Parent-Child Communication (PCC) Toolkit on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

Getting here took time and many voices. The toolkit was first piloted in six Shehias “wards”, reaching over 100 participants. Lessons from the pilot shaped further reviews by a Technical Working Group of 12 experts, consultations with stakeholders from Unguja and Pemba, and several rounds of technical and management reviews within the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Elders and Children (MCDGEC). Each step helped ensure that the final document reflects Zanzibar’s cultural, linguistic and social context.

Today, the result is more than a toolkit. It is a nationally endorsed resource that gives parents and guardians practical support to talk with young people about reproductive health, healthy and respectful relationships, making informed choices, protecting themselves from risks and seeking help when they need it.
