Hassan Assumes Presidency of Tanzania

(MENAFN) Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan took the oath of office Monday for a five-year presidential term after securing a landslide 97.66 percent of votes in the nation's recent general elections.

Hassan, the candidate of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, was sworn in by Chief Justice George Masaju during an official ceremony held at Chamwino State House grounds in the capital Dodoma. Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi simultaneously took his oath of office at the event.

The elections, conducted last week, were overshadowed by widespread demonstrations erupting across multiple regions, including Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Songwe and Arusha. Predominantly young Tanzanians flooded the streets demanding comprehensive electoral reforms and the immediate, unconditional release of imprisoned opposition leaders.

Tanzanian police responded by imposing a curfew in the port city of Dar es Salaam following the unrest. The government subsequently ordered public servants to transition to remote work while shuttering schools and higher education institutions for an indefinite duration.

Speaking Saturday after receiving her victory certificate from the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Hassan denounced the protests and appealed for national unity.

"We should stand as one to protect Tanzania," Hassan said, while commending the defense and security organs for maintaining national stability.

Following her inauguration, Hassan directed defense and security forces to restore normalcy throughout the country beginning Monday, after violent demonstrations resulted in casualties and property destruction.

Hassan claimed investigative reports from security agencies revealed the protests were orchestrated by youth from neighboring countries.

"Our security organs are continuing with investigations," Hassan said.

The sweeping electoral victory and subsequent civil unrest have cast a spotlight on Tanzania's political landscape as Hassan begins her new term amid tensions between the government and opposition movements.
